Meet the Team – Darren Busby

Global Head of Sales at MYHSM

In order to succeed as a global provider of Payment Hardware Security Modules (HSM) as a service, it’s incredibly important to attract a retain talent at all levels of the business – employees are the most valuable resource for any company.

That’s why we’re launching MYHSM’s ‘meet the team’ series, to showcase our brilliant team across the board.

First up is our Global Head of Sales, Darren Busby. Here, we discuss his career history, main responsibilities and what’s next in payments security.

Tell us about your career history

My career in payments began more than 20 years ago when I started out as a Systems Engineer with Interlink Funds Switching Technology. The company was later acquired by CR2 and since then I’ve worked with most of the key software and service suppliers in the payment industry making the transition from pre-sales to new business sales, and from there to sales management for the likes of S2 Systems, ACI, FIS, Yalamanchilli, Sopra Banking, Compass Plus, and now MYHSM.

From my career I’ve got some fantastic stories to tell and there have been some real highlights along the way. It has to be said that one of the best highlights has been the people I’ve met along the way, whether that’s been my team, senior management or clients.

How did you get into the payments industry?

I joined the Royal Air Force Regiment in 1993, but before long I decided that I wanted to try and get a degree too, mainly to open up my career options as I got older. I achieved a BSc (Hons) through the Open University in just four years which enabled me to go on to join Interlink as a Graduate Systems Engineer and this kickstarted my career in payments.

What does your job entail and what are your main responsibilities at MYHSM?

At MYHSM, my job varies greatly from day to day, but you will usually find me working with key partners, defining the sales strategy and go-to-market plans for MYHSM, or managing our small but very effective team of sales professionals. The thing that really sparks my enthusiasm at MYHSM, is that I’m proud to work for the only company in the world that is able to do what we do – provide scalable, secure, cloud-based Payment HSMs as a service.

What, in your opinion, is next in payment security in 2020?

This year, I foresee that as with public cloud adoption, more tier 1 banks and payment companies will begin to feel comfortable with outsourcing their Payment HSMs to MYHSM. In turn, they will embrace the mindset change that is required for this new operational model.

Up to now, payment HSMs have largely been seen as a necessary evil; a cost base that banks have to have. But it is only now with the dash to the cloud that people are beginning to realise how much of a burden on-premise Payment HSMs are to their company’s overall strategy and operational costs.

More recently, the impact of Covid-19 has made the option of replacing physical datacenters and payment HSMs equipment with a fully managed service even more attractive.
